Clonidine Hydrochloride is a centrally acting alpha-2 adrenergic agonist used primarily to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It works by stimulating receptors in the brain to relax blood vessels and lower heart rate, thereby improving blood flow. Beyond blood pressure management, it is FDA-approved for treating ADHD in children (often as an extended-release form) and managing tics in Tourette syndrome. Off-label uses include withdrawal management (opioids, alcohol, nicotine), migraine prophylaxis, and menopausal hot flashes. Important: This medication must not be stopped abruptly, as it can cause severe rebound hypertension. Common side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, and dizziness.
